castellina in chianti - tuscany
wine in amphorae - olive oil - farmhouse stay
the ancient farm of grignanello stands on a hill in a privileged position between the municipalities of panzano and castellina in chianti- the property consists of ten hectares of old vineyards, mostly dating back to the early sixties - just under two thousand olive trees - twenty hectares of arable land partly cultivated with wheat, spelt and barley - twenty hectares of woodland and a lake- two main buildings form the central structure of the hamlet and enclose an area at the centre of which stands the ancient consecrated church - the restoration of the buildings was carried out with particular attention to the use of natural or reclaimed materials - the homes are heated with wood, with simple and efficient solutions - particular care was taken over the insulation of walls and roofs - all the work was designed and carried out by us- we try to respect our land by not using herbicides, chemicals or other poisons-
we produce red wine - white wine - rosé wine - vin santo - olive oil - grappa - barley - spelt- even though our wine meets the requirements of the classification that certifies quality products, we chose not to bind ourselves to a specification that would have constrained us both in the ageing phase and in the later bottling phase- our red grapes sangiovese, canaiolo, foglia tonda and colorino, and our white grapes malvasia and trebbiano, are vinified, macerated and aged in terracotta amphorae, giare and orci-
the choice of a cardboard package was suggested by its functional characteristics - no oxygen in contact with the wine - protection from light and heat - low environmental impact - being able to drink even a single glass and still find the organoleptic characteristics of the wine unaltered a month after opening- the choice of the bottle, of a particular type of cork, of a unique label designed entirely by us, all of it follows our philosophy: the wine - the oil - the renovation of the hamlet - everything comes from a strong need to get closer to the land and its products - to return to living in small communities, recovering values lost for far too long, such as sharing-
Mario has a passion for sustainable agriculture and wine production- thanks to this passion he became the owner of grignanello, an estate located between panzano and castellina in chianti- under his guidance, grignanello has been restored with great attention to the use of natural materials and sustainable techniques- he chose to avoid herbicides and chemicals, promoting farming practices that respect the environment-
philosophy and vision
his philosophy is based on a strong bond with the land and its products- this approach is reflected not only in the farming methods but also in the structure and atmosphere of the grignanello estate, which invites visitors to immerse themselves in an authentic and sustainable way of life- his vision shows how it is possible to combine a successful career with a deep dedication to sustainable agriculture and high-quality winemaking- his commitment continues to inspire anyone who encounters the story of grignanello and its unique products-
the farm of grignanello (now part of the municipality of castellina in chianti) belonged, in the 18th century, to the podesteria of radda and depended on the pieve of santa maria a grignano- on a map in the carte dei capitani di parte guelfa the farm can be seen, symbolically represented by a rural house bearing the inscription - luogo di Franciesco Galilei -, while below appears the church of santa maria in the form it probably still had at the end of the 16th century, when the maps were drawn- the property, as it still does today, covered the top of a hill 400 m above sea level, at about km 26 of the strada statale chiantigiana- the farm, then, with its 122 stiora, covers an area slightly larger than the average tuscan farm of the 18th century, which Imberciadori puts at 80 - 100 stiora of land, but if we consider the wooded part and the stony part, therefore hardly cultivable, we can place grignanello within the typical landholding of the tuscan hill country-
